Lessons from the Field
Freelancing in digital marketing is often painted as the dream—flexibility, diverse clients, and the freedom to work from anywhere. But behind the highlight reel is a world of challenges, constant learning, and strategic positioning. Having worked with organizations ranging from international nonprofits to startups to government agencies, I’ve learned firsthand what it takes to survive and thrive in this space.
The Lifeblood of Freelancing
One of the biggest hurdles in freelance marketing is securing consistent work. Unlike traditional employment, where tasks are assigned, freelancers must actively seek projects. Building a strong portfolio, networking, and leveraging platforms like LinkedIn and Upwork have been key to my success. Some not-so-widely-talked-about tips for finding work include searching local government sites for RFPs or preparing a “cold pitch” for a business or organization in your community that could benefit from your expertise.
Managing Multiple Clients Effectively
Freelancing means juggling multiple clients, each with their own expectations. Organization is critical. I’ve found that project management tools like Asana and Trello streamline task tracking, while structured communication keeps projects on track. When executing an integrated communications campaign for the City of Denver’s Office of Children’s Affairs, meticulous planning and project management ensured messaging consistency across several interworking departments and programs.
Adapting to Industry Shifts
Digital marketing is an ever-evolving landscape. From Google’s algorithm changes to emerging AI-driven tools, staying relevant requires continuous learning. Freelancers must upskill constantly, which is why I pursue and maintain certifications in leading industry software and platforms like the Google Analytics Certification, HubSpot Content & Social Media Marketing Certification, and Google Ads Certification, to name a few.
Freelancing has allowed me the opportunity to work with various organizations and initiatives that I personally resonate with and support. With the right strategies, it can be an incredibly rewarding career path.
