Nonprofit Storytelling and Community Impact | YWCA

As an in-house communications specialist, I had the opportunity to support a wide range of programs, events, and fundraising initiatives while helping tell the stories behind the organization’s mission.

My work touched nearly every aspect of communications. I designed print and digital marketing materials, created content for internal and external newsletters, managed website updates, captured photography and video content, and supported media relations through press releases and outreach. I also documented programs and community events through visual storytelling that highlighted the impact of the organization’s work.

One of my favorite aspects of the position was supporting fundraising efforts. Through campaign materials, photography, and video storytelling, I helped communicate the impact of programs and services to donors and community partners. I helped plan and execute a fundraising event that generated more than $70,000 to support rural domestic violence victims. I also planned and executed a Giving Tuesday campaign that raised more than $21,000 in online donations within 24 hours.

n addition to fundraising communications, I planned, implemented, and evaluated digital marketing campaigns designed to increase awareness and engagement. Through mostly organic content strategies, I helped grow the organization’s social media presence by nearly 1,700 followers on Facebook and 340 followers on Instagram within one year.

Because nonprofit organizations often operate with limited resources, flexibility is essential. On any given day, I might be photographing an event, updating website content, designing graphics, producing videos, or supporting media outreach. These experiences strengthened my ability to work across multiple communication channels while maintaining consistent messaging and brand identity.

Most importantly, this work reinforced the power of storytelling to inspire action and create meaningful connections between organizations and the communities they serve.
